Lien was perfectly content spending a carefree youth bought up as an adopted member of a reclusive tribe and playing pranks on the knights of the Order of the Coeur. But when his guardian disappears, the peaceful existence of the People is shattered and he finds himself plagued by a recurring nightmare convincing him that Arete is in trouble and needs his help.

Utterly ignorant of life outside the nomadic wanderings of the People, Lien travels to the sprawling city-state of Avenel for answers, but finds surviving this hectic new world to be much more dangerous than even the deadly haunted forests and plains he is used to. In no time at all he is up to his neck in trouble with the city Guard, Lords, Ladies, knights, personified forces of nature, a vengeful dwarf and, most baffling of all, other teenagers his own age.

It seems however that Arete had neglected to tell Lien some fairly important details about his past. Aided and occasionally hindered by young chevaliers of the Order, a wanted criminal, a girl who can’t stand him and a very angry captured night mare, Lien sets about trying to untangle of the mystery of Arete’s disappearance now from the truth of his own past, and the unavoidable reality of his future.

But everyone seems to have big ideas for Lien, whether he likes it or not, and while he reluctantly accepts that to help Arete and protect his adopted family the People, he must join the Order of the Coeur, he can’t understand of the life of him why so many people would rather see him dead than accepted into the Knighthood.
